What are car insurance groups?

Every car sold in the UK is assigned an insurance group between 1 and 50 by Thatcham Research. Insurers use the group as a key factor when pricing your premium. Lower groups are significantly cheaper to insure.

How is my car's insurance group decided?

Each group is set by the Group Rating Panel, a committee of UK insurers coordinated by Thatcham Research on behalf of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Every new car model and engine variant is scored against the same set of tests before it goes on sale, then placed in one of the 50 groups.

The panel scores: repair costs and how long repairs take, the price and availability of parts, the car's new list price, performance (acceleration and top speed), braking, and Thatcham's own security rating for how hard the car is to steal or break into. Two versions of the same model, such as a base petrol and a turbocharged one, can sit in noticeably different groups because of this.

That's also why a generic "what group is a Ford Fiesta" answer is unreliable: the exact group depends on the specific engine size, trim and year, which is why this checker looks up the specific vehicle behind your registration plate rather than a model name.
