MOTCompare Risk Score Methodology
The risk score is a quick signal based on MOT history patterns. It highlights vehicles with a higher chance of future issues, but it is not a guarantee of outcomes.
What the score represents
The score ranges from 0 to 10. Higher is better. It starts from MOT history signals such as serious fails, recent serious fails, and advisory density, then adds weight for keyword flags found in defect notes.
Main factors
- Serious fail ratio Higher serious fail counts reduce the score.
- Recent serious fails Fails in the last 2 years are weighted more.
- Advisory density Many advisories in recent tests increase risk.
- Mileage inconsistencies Drops or anomalies increase risk.
- Weighted keywords Safety and emission defects increase risk.
Weighted keywords
We scan defect notes for specific keywords and apply weights. Higher weights represent more serious or costly issues. Examples include:
- Gas leak (weight 12)
- Oil leak (weight 10)
- Oil pressure (weight 9)
- Exhaust gases (weight 9)
- Brake failure (weight 9)
- Emissions (weight 8)
- Brake fluid (weight 8)
- Coolant leak (weight 7)
- Smoke/opacity (weight 6)
- Fluid leak (weight 5)
- Corrosion (weight 4)
How to use the score
Use the score as a starting point. Always review the full MOT history, mileage trends, and condition of the vehicle before making a decision.
